Where are we?
We are in Markstakes Lane, South Chailey East Sussex just off the A275. We meet on most Monday mornings at 09.30 at the gate in the flint wall in the lane.
Who are we and what do we do?
Markstakes Common is a small nature reserve with a mix of landscapes; grassland, ancient woodland, wood pasture and mire. Past use is likely to have been bracken harvesting, rough pasturage and ad hoc extraction of timber. When it fell into disuse it became overgrown with Bracken, Bramble and Birch, which the Friends are striving to control so as to enhance the wildlife and amenity value. The site hosts a fine variety of fungi, several species of bat including the rare Bechsteins bat and certain plants that are scarce elsewhere in Sussex. Above all, what visitors appreciate is its wild and unspoilt character. I hope you find the time to visit and enjoy the site.
